Dan Savage and Terry Miller married at King County Court in Washington on December 6, 2012

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights advocate Dan Savage wed his longtime partner, Terry Miller.

Dan Savage is an author, journalist and most widely known as the creator of the It Gets Better Project, alongside his husband, Terry Miller.

In 2010, Savage started the It Gets Better Project in light of the suicide of 15-year-old Billy Lucas, who was bullied for his perceived sexual orientation. The project encourages adults, both LGBT and otherwise, to submit videos assuring gay teenagers that life can improve after bullying in early life.

“It’s really a remarkable journey we’ve been on and such a remarkable sea change. And not just for gay people, but straight people have changed, too. It’s gotten better for us because straight people have gotten better about us,” said Savage.

Although the couple wed in Canada back in 2005, they chose to remarry in Washington hours after Governor Chris Gregoire signed the voter-approved law allowing same-sex couples to marry.
